$1 million anonymous donation helps fund scholarships

A $1 million anonymous donation has helped to start a new college scholarship program in the Ann Arbor area.

The Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation announced the gift during its annual community meeting Monday night at Washtenaw Community College.

The Ann Abor News reports the need-based program is designed to help low-income students, students of color and first-generation college students.

Shelley Strickland, the foundation's vice president for development and donor services, says the foundation received the donation earlier this year but waited to announce it so it could introduce the first group of scholarship recipients at the same time.

The scholarships will fund $1,500 per year at a community college and $3,000 per year at a university, up to a maximum of five years.
