A $6.5 million grant will help a University of Michigan researcher study cancer stem cells, the small number of cells within a tumor that fuel its growth and spread.

The Ann Arbor school on Thursday announced the Outstanding Investigator Award funding from the National Cancer Institute for Dr. Max Wicha.

The school says the award is roughly three times a traditional individual investigator award and is part of a new grant program developed by the National Cancer Institute.

The program funds projects of unusual potential in cancer research over an extended period of seven years.

The goal is to provide investigators with time to break ground or extend previous discoveries to advance biomedical, behavioral or clinical cancer research.
