The annual ArtPrize competition is changing the rules, saying past grand prize winners won't be eligible to compete in future competitions.

Changes were announced Thursday.

Previously, grand prize winners couldn't compete the next year.

Spokesman Todd Herring tells The Grand Rapids Press the goal is to "challenge the familiar and challenge the status quo." He says the change is aimed at keeping the choice of finalists fresh.

Previous winners still can display works.

Last year's $200,000 winners were Steven and Ann Loveless. In 2013, Ann Loveless won the grand prize.

ArtPrize takes place Sept. 21-Oct. 19 in Grand Rapids.

An official Preview Week is Sept. 14-20.

And up to $273,000 will be made available to artists and venues needing financial help to build major exhibitions.
