Bitterly cold weather is making its way into Michigan, prompting officials to warn people to take precautions when spending time outdoors.

The National Weather Service has issued wind chill advisories across the state on Friday and into the weekend, with temperatures forecast to drop below zero at times.

With winds around 20 mph or more in places, forecasters say it will feel like 15 to 30 below zero.

In western Michigan, including the cities of Holland and South Haven, a winter storm warning is in effect until Saturday afternoon.

Whiteout conditions are possible as winds kick up and 6 to 10 inches of snow is predicted by the time the storm ends.

Northern Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula, also is expected to see new snow along with the cold temperatures.
