Company responsible for oil spill to pay mobile home park

A southwestern Michigan jury has awarded damages to a mobile home park stemming from the 2010 oil spill that fouled the Kalamazoo River, but far less than what attorneys sought.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports the Calhoun County jury on Wednesday awarded $155,100 to Battle Creek Realty, which owns Baker Estates.

Attorneys representing Baker Estates argued the July 2010 spill damaged the Emmett Township mobile home park and sought $6 million.

The jury found the spill didn't cause damage but did cut into profits.

Enbridge Energy and Baker Estates representatives declined comment after the verdict.

Enbridge, based in Calgary, Alberta, was responsible for one of the nation's largest inland oil spills history.

More than 800,000 gallons of oil poured out of a ruptured line, spoiling the river and tributaries.
