Jill Vyn, managing director DiArt has been employing a range of strategies to change perceptions around disability through art that centers disability or artists with disabilities

“We  do that, as an organization, through curated experiences and strategic partnerships in our community. Just really focused on trying to create a more welcoming and inclusive community as a whole.”

One of their staple programs is the “Disability Arts Now Symposium,” which will happen this Thursday through Saturday, April 6-8 at the Art Prize Hub on Sheldon.

“So we have three days of events. Three days of the presenters. Everything is live-streamed but then on each of the days we have a period of time that has keynote speakers. Those are public events where we’re including and inviting and encouraging people from the public.”

Among the evening  events are a silent film by Helen Keller, and a comedian with a dance number. Each keynote will address one of three topics: identity, design and community. If you want to attend:

“So there’s two ways. One would be go to our website, which is “disartfestival.org”

Or, you can just show up, whatever your ability.

“There’s just been a lot of thought put in from the beginning of how to create an experience that is the most welcoming and inclusive to the broadest range of people.”
