Voters in West Michigan are heading to the polls today to cast their ballots on a number of proposals and elections.
In the City of Grand Rapids, Commissioner Senita Lenear is hoping voters re-elect her in the city’s 3rd Ward. Originally elected to the city commission in 2014, Lenear faces challenger Kent Boersema, a political science and criminal justice graduate of Grand Valley State University.
Meanwhile, voters in Grand Rapids will consider a new millage that will help fund the Grand Rapids Public Library. While the new millage would essentially extend the same tax homeowners have been paying on an expiring library millage for the past 20 years, the millage is technically not a renewal as the library will use the funds for different in house purposes than it had previously.
In Kent County, The Rapid’s operating millage that funds Greater Grand Rapids public transportation system is up for renewal. Originally passed in 2011, The Rapid estimates the 12 year millage would raise over $15 million in the first year.
In Muskegon, four candidates are vying for two City Commissioner at Large seats. Challengers Alan Greene and John Page are looking to unseat incumbents Ken Johnson and Daniel Sybenga, both who are finishing their first term as city commissioner at large.
Muskegon County could become the third county in the state to adopt a special tax to help children and families. A home worth $100,000 would get an additional tax of $75 per year. Supporters say the money could be used to prevent youth violence, provide after-school opportunities and offer employment help.
Finally, Muskegon Mayor Steve Gawron is hoping voters re-elect him for another term. Originally voted into office in 2012, Gawron will have to beat challenger and neighborhood activist Will Springstead.
