The Gerald R. Ford airport in Grand Rapids will receive more than $2.5 million in federal funds.

The funding was announced jointly on Friday by U.S. senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters.

It’ll go toward runway rehabilitation at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids and comes from a Federal Aviation Administration program.

"This investment will make traveling to and from Grand Rapids safer and more efficient," Stabenow says in a news release. "Safe and reliable air travel will also help encourage businesses to invest in the region and create jobs."

Peters says the money will help the airport authority update its master plan and improve operations.

The FAA’s Runway Incursion Management Program helps eliminate risks associated with unauthorized access to runways.

The Ford airport offers flights from five airlines with an average of more than 7,000 daily travelers.

The airport says it served more than 2.5 million passengers in 2015.
