Ford Motor said Tuesday it has canceled its plans on production of a $1.6 billion plant in Mexico, and has decided to instead invest $700 million in an expansion of an existing Flat Rock, Michigan.
Ford said the decision will add 700 new jobs in Flat Rock to produce high-tech electrified and autonomous vehicles, plus the Ford Mustang and Lincoln Continental.
During the final weeks of the presidential campaign, President-elect Donald Trump was highly critical of Ford’s initial plans to move all small car production to Mexico within 3 years.
The company stressed Trump had nothing to do with their decision to expand production and hire more employees.
