Michigan's historical institutions and organizations can apply for small grants aimed at preserving historical records and making them publicly accessible.

The Michigan State Historical Records Advisory Board announced Monday that grants of up to $2,000 are available through the Save Michigan History program.

State archivist Mark Harvey says in a release that people expect historical records to be available but paying for their preservation can be challenging.

The state board, whose members are appointed by the governor, works with the National Historical Publications and Records Commission on the grants.

Applications are due by March 1.
