Great American Smokeout: Kent County Encourages Change

The Kent County Health Department is urging residents who smoke to move toward a healthier lifestyle.  Today is the American Cancer Society’s 40th annual, “Great American Smokeout.”

“The challenge today is take today off. Quit for one day and we’ll see if we can quit for 2 days. And keep quitting.”

Administrative Health Officer, Adam London, says the county has endorsed the efforts of the American Cancer Society and is hoping residents who smoke, will at least try to break the habit.

“We all know this, it’s very difficult to stop, very addictive. And so what’s important is that people quit and they keep quitting and keep fighting this. It takes multiple attempts."

London says the number of smokers and tobacco users has dropped in Kent County; he says the latest survey shows 13% of adults currently smoke.  In the state, it’s 21 percent. But, lung cancer is the leading cause of all cancer deaths in the state, killing more than 57 hundred people in 2013.  London adds, even if you don’t smoke, don’t ignore today’s message, help out:

“To really rally around those who struggle with this.  Most aren’t happy and they’d like to quit. It’s important for those of us who don’t smoke, to help others.”

The county notes ther are many resources that can help.  The American Cancer Society has a toolkit on its website and many insurance plans, including medicare and Medicaid, may help pay for assistance.

“Little bit. Quit this afternoon, then the day.  Take on tomorrow when tomorrow comes. But quit today.”
