Groups collect 26K signatures on Flint water petition

Three groups working to end the use of the Flint River for the city's drinking water are hoping a petition with 26,000 signatures will show strong support for the change.

Food & Water Watch, Water You Fighting For and the Coalition for Clean Water planned to deliver the petition Monday to Flint Mayor Dayne Walling and City Administrator Natasha Henderson. The Flint Journal reports that the petition asks city officials to reconnect the municipal water supply to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.

Flint has been in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act since the beginning of this year due to high levels of trihalomethanes.

Although city officials have claimed the drinking water is safe, they have warned residents of potential health problems related to the chemical compounds.
