Republicans fared well across west Michigan. Much of the same held true along the lakeshore.

WGVU takes a closer look at those races from Holland to Montague.

In Ottawa County, Holland Republican Daniela Garcia defeated Democrat Mary Yedinak by a three to one margin in House District 90. With 61 percent of the vote Republican Jim Lilly from Macatawa defeated Grand Haven Democrat Tim Meyer.  In Muskegon County the race in Michigan House District 91 came down to the wire. It was the third time incumbent Republican Rep.Holly Hughes and Democrat Collene Lamonte faced off with Hughes winning by five points, 49 to 44. Hughes tells us she’ll continue her efforts in Lansing.

“Still working on the Promise Zone even though that legislation is done we’re still trying to raise private money for that. We’ve got 16 school districts working on it. So all these things about the different things that we’re working on, the port legislation, etc. We’re trying to get done and there’s still a lot of veterans stuff that needs to be done.”

One of the few bright spots for Democrats also was found in Muskegon County where Terry Sabo defeated Republican Marshall Davis by nearly a three to one margin. Sabo has been an employee of public for a quarter century.

“You know I’ve seen the good and bad of government and we need to do better as far as establishing, you know, a better relationship between the state government and local government.”

Sabo says he’s committed to making a better Michigan.
