Lansing continues focus on increasing victim’s rights

Victims of certain crimes in Michigan could become harder to track down – and advocates say that’s for their own safety.

Legislation that passed the state Senate would let victims keep their addresses confidential.

Victims of certain crimes – like sexual assault, stalking, and domestic violence – should be able to keep their addresses secret in order to stay safe. That’s the idea behind a package of bills.

Republican Senator Margaret O’Brien is a bill sponsor. She says the legislation is in response to a woman terrified of her ex-husband. Nicole Beverly has said she needs to leave the state by the time her ex-husband gets out of prison. Beverly says he stalked her and tried to get people to kill her.

“And we’re trying to protect people like Nicole Beverly where this is life and death.”

A victim’s driver’s license and other forms of identification would have a state address instead of their actual home address.
