The Michigan Supreme Court will consider the redistricting ballot proposal

The Michigan Supreme Court will consider whether a redistricting proposal can go on the November 20-18 ballot.

Voters Not Politicians is the group behind the redistricting proposal. It says it’s confident the Michigan Supreme Court will decide that the ballot proposal meets all the requirements. The proposal would overhaul how the state draws its district lines – It would put a 13-member commission in charge of the job instead of the state Legislature.

A group called Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution opposes the measure. It says the proposal would amend too much of the state’s constitution and that the ballot isn’t the way to handle this.

The Michigan Court of Appeals recently ordered a state elections board to approve the measure for the ballot. But Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution appealed.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on July 18th.
