A motorist who was driving without a valid license has been sentenced to a year in jail in connection with a crash that killed a 4-year-old western Michigan boy.

WOOD-TV reports 70-year-old Susan Rieckman learned her punishment Thursday. She earlier pleaded guilty to driving with a license suspended, revoked or denied causing death in the crash that killed Talos Bills.

The Cedar Springs woman says she's sorry for the family's loss.

A judge also gave Rieckman five years of probation and 150 hours of community service.

Talos was struck by a pickup Sept. 14 while crossing a road on his scooter in downtown Greenville, northeast of Grand Rapids. His teenage cousin was hit and suffered minor injuries.

They were returning home after buying doughnuts at a gas station.
