Muskegon based non-profit handing out free meals for seniors curbside

AgeWell Services Facebook page

With the demand for food growing in Muskegon, a local organization has launched a curbside pickup program for seniors, providing tens of thousands of meals to those in need. That organization would be Muskegon based AgeWell Services of West Michigan, a nonprofit formerly known as Nutritional Services for Older Americans and Meals on Wheels. With seniors at a higher risk for contracting COVID-19, AgeWell has launched a new curbside meal pickup program for persons over the age of 60, giving out five meals at a time to seniors, and for free.

“Our curbside locations are averaging about 300 people, per session, and each site is serving approximately 1500 meals, so that a good 6000 meals that are going out the door.”

That is Kris Collee, the executive director of AgeWell Services. She says that resources are running thin.

“I think our largest need right now is funding,” Collee said. “To be able to provide as many meals as we can to our seniors, to make sure they are home and safe is really important to us,” she said.

In addition, Collee says, they are in need of masks for volunteers, while urging everyone to check on their elderly neighbors during this period of sheltering in place. The next curbside meal distribution will be Wednesday, April 8, 12pm-2pm at the Ravenna First Reformed Church.

A complete list of curbside dates is available at AgeWellservices.org.
