State police say five people died in four separate traffic crashes during the Memorial Day holiday weekend in Michigan.

The numbers were released Thursday following preliminary reports to state police.

In 2015, police say eight people died in six Memorial Day weekend crashes in the state.

The 2016 Memorial Day holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on May 27 through the end of the day Monday.

State police had stepped-up traffic enforcement for the holiday weekend.

The patrols were part of the nationwide Operation CARE, which stands for Combined Accident Reduction Effort.

The Click It or Ticket safety belt enforcement campaign also was ongoing.
