Snyder asks Congress to re-authorize DACA

nikanenders.org

Governor Rick Snyder is asking Congress to act to protect people from deportation who were brought to the country illegally as children.

The governor was responding to President Trump’s announcement that the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program will end in six months.

There about 64 hundred people in Michigan who are protected from removal under the program. Governor Snyder says they deserve certainty and the chance to make a future in Michigan. In a written statement released by his office, Snyder said Michigan will -quote “continue to honor everyone’s journey,” and will be the “most welcoming state” for immigrants.

The state Civil Rights director says his department will be on the lookout for any hate crimes that might be spurred by the announcement from the president, as well as violations Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.
