Efforts by the state Department of Natural Resources to manage chronic wasting disease in deer in a Lansing-area community will be presented during a town hall meeting.
Information on the disease also will be discussed Thursday at Meridian Township offices in Okemos. The DNR is asking hunters and community residents to attend the meeting.
Three free-ranging deer in the township have tested positive since May for the contagious, fatal disease that attacks the brains of infected deer and elk.
DNR officials say hunters should have their deer checked and tested to help determine the spread of the disease.
Until May, chronic wasting disease hadn't appeared in Michigan since 2008, when an infected white-tailed deer was detected at a Kent County breeding farm.
