From Detroit to the Upper Peninsula, many Michigan residents will observe Labor Day by taking to the streets - or bridges.

Officials expect about 40,000 people to join the annual walk across the Mackinac Bridge.

Gov. Rick Snyder will lead the crowd over the 5-mile span beginning Monday at 7 a.m.

In a new twist, 84 athletes will swim across the Straits of Mackinac to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

Meanwhile, the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO will host its annual Labor Day March. Several unions including the United Auto Workers will host Labor Fest in Detroit.

Another union-organized parade is scheduled in Muskegon.

In Grand Rapids, Mayor George Heartwell will lead the 5-mile Grand Crossings walk over six Grand River bridges.

Shorter bridge walks are scheduled in Frankenmuth and Midland.
