US Attorneys Office: Nassar deserved 'nothing less'

Justice has been served. That is what prosecuting attorneys said after US District Judge Janet T. Neff sentenced former gymnast doctor Larry Nassar to 3 consecutive 20 year sentences for possessing and producing child pornography. The sentence nearly guarantees Nassar will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

“Today Larry Nassar faced a day of reckoning," Prosecuting United States Attorney Andrew Birge said. "He deserved nothing less.”

In November, Nassar pleaded guilty to seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and admitted to using his position to sexually abuse underage girls. He will be sentenced on those state charges in January.

US Attorney Birge praised those who had the courage to come forward, and hopes the verdict will bring some sense of closure.

“My heart goes out to the victims those in the images, and those he sexually molested," Birge said. With today’s sentencing, I hope the victim’s find a new sense of self-worth in knowing their role in this outcome. And I hope they and the public find some measure of reassurance in knowing that Nassar has been held accountable for his actions.”

If Nassar is still alive, he would be 114 years old when his sentence expires.
