Wednesday, September 13th @ 10 PM WGVU Public Television is airing USS Indianapolis Live - From The Deep.

Lost for 72 years, the wreckage of the US Navy cruiser the USS Indianapolis was located last month, 18,000 feet below the surface of the Philippine Sea. The program will share, for the first time, a live video tour of the wreckage from a remotely operated submersible three miles below the ocean surface halfway around the globe.

The last person to have contact with the Indy before it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine was a farm boy from Scotts, Michigan. Francis Max Smith was born January 27th, 1924. He passed away in 2015 but he left his daughter Patricia Smith his story as told by WGVU Real Oldies disc jockey, Tom Wyant.

Patrick joined WGVU Public Media in December, 2008 after eight years of investigative reporting at Grand Rapids' WOOD-TV8 and three years at WYTV News Channel 33 in Youngstown, Ohio. As News and Public Affairs Director, Patrick manages our daily radio news operation and public interest television programming. An award-winning reporter, Patrick has won multiple Michigan Associated Press Best Reporter/Anchor awards and is a three-time Academy of Television Arts & Sciences EMMY Award winner with 14 nominations.
