The Laker Line has officially been given the green light with the approval of government funding. The Laker Line operating primarily along Lake Michigan Drive (M-45) will replace The Rapid’s Route 50 with bus rapid transit between Grand Valley State University’s Allendale Campus and downtown Grand Rapids Pew Campus – and – the Cooke Devos Center for Health Sciences along the Medical Mile.

Grand Valley State University has agreed to settle a federal lawsuit that said the university unfairly restricted free speech on campus.

Student group "Turning Point USA at Grand Valley State University" was critical of the school's Free Speech Zone Policy. It filed a lawsuit in December claiming GVSU was limiting expressive activity to "speech zones" and requiring students to gain prior university permission.

In the settlement, the university is adopting a revised policy and agreed to pay about $11,000 in legal fees and costs.

University to begin Mackinac Ravine restoration

Grand Valley State University is planning to start construction soon on the Mackinac Ravine to address erosion that could affect nearby buildings. the Allendale campus development has accelerated erosion at the ravine streambed, resulting in less soil at the slopes providing support.

The president of Grand Valley State University says he feels "devastated" by four sexual assaults near campus and calls the recent series of attacks a "cancer."

Grand Valley State University and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department continue efforts to apprehend the perpetrator responsible for a string of off-campus assaults. The fourth assault of a female Grand Valley student was reported Tuesday night outside off-campus apartments. The first occurred on Aug. 26.

Police are stepping up patrols and using plainclothes officers near Grand Valley State University.

Multiple sexual assaults have been reported in the vicinity of off-campus apartment complexes since the start of school. 

Captain Mark Bennett is with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. 

"It’s our belief that there certainly is a connection (between the cases)," he says. "To say definitely – at this point, I can’t do that but for investigative purposes we’re moving forward as if there is a connection.

A fourth assault has been reported near Grand Valley State University.

Police say it occurred Tuesday night at about 10 p.m. near the Trio Townhouses - an off-campus apartment complex near GVSU's Allendale campus. 

Grand Valley officials are urging students to check in with friends more frequently, participate in ride shares and walk in groups. A public forum is planned Thursday.

The Ottawa County sheriff's office is asking apartment managers to share any security video. Capt. Mark Bennett says it could show who is coming and going in the area.

A third sexual assault has been reported near a western Michigan university since the start of classes this academic year.

WZZM-TV reports that Ottawa County sheriff's investigators say the attacks near Grand Valley State University in Allendale may be related.

A student told police she was confronted Thursday night by two men and assaulted by one of them as she walked between buildings at an apartment complex.

Students have returned to Grand Valley State University in record numbers. Roughly 6,300 are calling the Allendale campus home. That’s up 150 students from last year. With year-over-year enrollment increasing, GVSU has opened a new learning and living student.

NFL team scouts visited Allendale for Pro Day on Tuesday. Those scouts got an up close look at Kirk Spencer, Jim Walsh, Branden Revenburg and Ben Hutchins. The second half of the Pro day session belonged to Matt Judon who is projected to be the highest NFL pick in Grand Valley State History.
