West Michigan’s 2018 economy got off to a strong start in January and February was even better.

Traditionally, West Michigan’s economy experiences the winter blues in February. It either flattens out or slides just a bit, but not this year. Brian G. Long is director of Supply Management Research in the Seidman College of Business. He explains with the recent passage of the tax law the local economy accelerated backed by firms specializing in capital equipment or export.

February is Heart Month.  And during this month, there are messages everywhere about the importance of maintaining optimal heart health.  Experts say Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.  Doctors at Spectrum say there is still a lot of “MIS-information” about heart disease and they’d like to change that.

Surprisingly strong sales of trucks and SUVs in February have brightened what is usually a lackluster month for the auto industry.

Sales of the Chevrolet Silverado pickup jumped 17 percent from last February to more than 50,500 trucks, while Ford sold nearly 69,000 SUVs - a February record.

Nissan said sales of its Rogue SUV jumped 54 percent.

Overall sales of new vehicles had been expected to fall slightly from a year ago, but some automakers performed better than industry analysts expected.
