Michigan will continue paying a company for prison food and to use its software while transitioning back to having state workers run prison kitchens.

A state subcommittee on Tuesday approved a new $35 million one-year contract for Trinity Services Group. The full State Administrative Board is expected to vote next week.

Michigan municipalities would be prohibited from levying local taxes on food and beverages under a bill advancing to Gov. Rick Snyder's desk for his expected signature.

No local government in Michigan is now considering such a tax. But lawmakers say it is possible, pointing to Philadelphia and Chicago as places with soda taxes. Similar taxes have been approved in San Francisco and Oakland, California.

The Republican-led Michigan Senate voted 30-5 Thursday to send the fast-tracked legislation to the governor.

Michigan consumers told to return certain Pepsi bottles

The maker of Pepsi is encouraging customers to return certain 16.9-ounce bottles of Pepsi-Cola that were sold in Michigan earlier this year. PepsiCo says there's no safety issue. But the company says it received 18 complaints of a metallic taste, from late February to early April. Minute particles of iron and chromium were found in bottles due to a parts failure during the manufacturing process in Howell, Michigan. I
