Reward money totaling $5,000 is being offered for information leading to the recovery of dozens of guns that were stolen from a store in western Michigan.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the National Shooting Sports Foundation are each offering $2,500 rewards.

The Kent County sheriff's department earlier had said it recovered at least 13 of 89 guns taken Nov. 4 from Family Farm and Home in Cedar Springs.

Two people were held for receiving and concealing stolen property, but the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities say they believe a man killed his 59-year-old mother at a home in western Michigan before killing himself.

The Kent County sheriff's department says the body of Gloria Launiere was found inside the home in Courtland Township on Monday and 34-year-old David Applegate was found critically injured.

The department says he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Lawrence Stelma says the deaths followed what appeared to be a domestic incident, but specifics were under investigation.

Police say an officer has fatally shot a man who was suspected of stealing a semi-automatic pistol from a gun store in western Michigan.

The shooting happened Wednesday night in the Grand Rapids-area community of Wyoming.

Police say the pistol was stolen from the gun store on Wednesday evening and the 25-year-old man was confronted by an officer about two hours later because of what looked like a gun in his back pocket.

Police say the man took out the gun and pointed it at the officer.

A west Michigan teenager’s death has been ruled a homicide by Kent County officials, and a suspect has been identified.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department says an autopsy found 18-year-old McKenna Hilton died of strangulation.

A charge of open murder has been issued for sixteen-year-old half-brother Savon Schmus.

Authorities say arraignment is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Police allege Savon strangled McKenna last week inside an apartment they lived in with their father and McKenna’s mother.

Authorities say a 16-year-old is in custody after the body of a young woman was found in a wooded area in western Michigan.

The Kent County sheriff's department says in a statement the death of 18-year-old McKenna Elizabeth Hilton of Grand Rapids is being investigated as homicide. An autopsy is planned Friday.

Officials say the person in custody, also from Grand Rapids, knew the victim.

The Grand Rapids Press reports an afternoon detention hearing was expected to be held in Kent County Family Court.

Three Republican candidates challenge longtime Kent County Sheriff Lawrence Stelma in Tuesday’s primary election.

Challengers include Timothy Lewis, a sheriff’s deputy and former county law enforcement union president.

Lewis filed to run for sheriff in 2012 but withdrew after Stelma decided to seek another term.

Three Democrat candidates are also on the Tuesday ballot against current Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler.

The sheriff seat has two Republican primary challengers.

A Kent County landlord has been charged with inappropriately touching women touring apartments as possible tenants.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department says 43-year-old Frank Tjoelker faces two charges of criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree.

An investigation was opened after a female reported the Grand Rapids man to police earlier this month. It allegedly occurred at a meeting to fill out a rental application for an apartment in Byron Township.

Police say they were able to identify other women who reported similar experiences.

Sheriff's deputies checking a home north of Grand Rapids have discovered a 2 ½-year-old girl and the body of a man who had been dead for days.

The Kent County sheriff's office says the child was unharmed.

She apparently was under the man's care when he died.

There's no sign of foul play at the house in the Kent City area.

The 49-year-old man was watching the girl for a friend.

Deputies checked the home Tuesday at the request of the man's relatives.

His name was not immediately released.

West Michigan officers remember those lost in the line of duty.

The fallen officer memorial service is held Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Grand Rapids Police Department's Monroe Center headquarters. 

A list of 31 officers are named, including those from Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Walker and Kent County law enforcement agencies, as well as the Michigan State Police.

The annual event is sponsored by the Gerald R. Ford Metro Lodge #97 of the Fraternal Order of Police and the GRPD.
