murder

“You are the lowest form of human life that I have been able to observe and see. You are a monster, and quite frankly, you are evil. What you did was sickening and disgusting. You should never be allowed out of prison.”

Judge Mark Trusock of the 17th District Court issued these harsh words to 25-year-old Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves of Gaines Township as he handed him a life sentence for the murder of 4-year-old Giovanni Mejias.

Authorities say two people were found dead following a fire in northern Indiana. Crews responded early Sunday to a 911 call reporting a fire in Elkhart County, near Goshen. Crews from four departments worked to extinguish the blaze. The Concord Township Fire Department says one person from the home was safe after the fire. Names of the dead weren't immediately released.

Cause of death was expected to be announced following autopsies scheduled for Monday in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A judge has refused to lower a $1 million bond for a former Michigan state trooper charged with murder, calling the request "offensive."

Mark Bessner and his lawyer appeared in court Thursday, a week before a judge determines if there's enough evidence to send him to trial.

Bessner has been in jail since he was charged two weeks ago with second-degree murder.

Bessner is charged in the death of a 15-year-old Detroit boy, who was struck with a Taser.

Police say the recent death of a vehicle passenger after teenagers allegedly threw rocks from a Flint area overpass is just one of many cases in the past four decades where people hurl debris from area bridges. Five teenagers have been charged with second-degree murder in connection to throwing rocks off the Interstate 75 overpass that led to 32-year-old Kenneth White's death this month.

Five teenagers have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Michigan man who was killed by a rock that smashed through the windshield of a vehicle in which he was riding. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says the teens are 15 to 17 years old and are being charged as adults.

Two men have been convicted of murder in the January shooting deaths of two men outside a mid-Michigan Walmart store. Otis Smith Jr. and Anthony Holloway, both of Grand Rapids, were convicted Monday in Shiawassee County Circuit Court in the deaths of 31-year-old Joseph Michael Carson and 39-year-old Anthony Lee Hammond, both of Flint.

The Michigan Supreme Court is set to hear a high-profile case about a man who fatally shot a woman who banged on his door following a late-night car crash in suburban Detroit. Ted Wafer was convicted of second-degree murder after shooting 19-year-old Renisha McBride on his Dearborn Heights porch in 2013. The issue for the Supreme Court on Thursday is jury instructions.

A man has been sentenced to 28 to 90 years in prison for a shooting at a Grand Rapids party that killed one person and injured eight others. Twenty-one-year-old Jokari Lowery learned his sentence Thursday after pleading no contest to second-degree murder for killing 21-year-old Juwan Boykin on Oct. 9.

Federal prosecutors say a former Serbian militia member charged with killing a Bosnian Muslim couple in 1994 faces up to 10 years in prison and losing his U.S. citizenship after lying to obtain it. They say 57-year-old Alexander Kneginich of Crown Point, Indiana, was convicted Friday of fraudulently obtaining U.S. citizenship in 2007 by denying he had ever been charged with a crime while he faced murder charges in Bosnia and Herzegovina stemming from the slayings during the Bosnian conflict.
