During a recent Grand Rapids Rotary Club luncheon, Dr. Thomas Haas, Chair of Michigan’s 21st Century Education Commission and President of Grand Valley State University explained Michigan students are underperforming.

Haas spoke with WGVU about the report and the commission tasked with making recommendations for revamping the state’s education delivery system.

A Michigan woman who began panhandling to raise $24,000 for her daughter to attend Michigan State University is calling it quits after raising less than half of her goal. Lori Truex says she'll end her fundraising campaign Thursday to return to work as a school bus driver. 

A foundation is highlighting the number of Michigan children who had a parent behind bars at some point in their lives.

A report using survey data from 2011 and 2012 says 10 percent of Michigan children had a parent in custody.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation says that's more than 200,000 children.

The report released Monday says Michigan and five other states were tied for the third-highest percentage of kids.

Only two states had a higher percentage: Kentucky and Indiana.

A western Michigan mother whose son fatally stabbed another boy at a playground has been sentenced.

Kent County Judge Paul Sullivan sentenced the woman whose son stabbed a boy at a Kentwood playground to serve jail time and five years' probation. Her son's stepfather was given the same sentence.

The two were convicted in September.
