Two high school graduates in southern Michigan have been chastised by their principal and a school board member for wearing Marine dress uniforms during commencement.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports Tuesday that the Marshall High School students decided not to wear their caps and gowns for Sunday's ceremony.

District superintendent Randy Davis says they were allowed to participate in order to avoid disappointing their families who earlier were told caps and gowns were required.

Michigan's first school safety reform since the Parkland, Florida, mass shooting has passed the House.

Lawmakers on Tuesday advanced a bipartisan five-bill package to create a school safety commission under the state police. The commission would pioneer statewide safety standards for school buildings, grade them based on new metrics and provide funds for campuses that need upgrades.

Michigan legislators are moving to bar juvenile sexual offenders from attending the same school district as their victims.

The state House voted 106-1 Thursday to require schools to remove students who commit criminal sexual conduct against another pupil in the same school district.

The bipartisan bill is being touted as a victory for safeguarding the protection and healing of school-aged victims of sexual assault. Current law only addresses expulsions for sexual assaults committed on school grounds.

Some Michigan schools closing in anticipation of snowstorm

Dec 13, 2017

Some Michigan schools are closing ahead of a storm that's expected to bring fresh snow to a wide swath of the state, creating hazardous traveling conditions. A winter storm warning was issued Wednesday for parts of the Lower Peninsula stretching from the Ludington and Muskegon area along Lake Michigan to the Detroit area in southeastern Michigan.

Forecasters say about 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) of new snow are expected by Thursday morning.

A 21-year-man faces charges including careless discharge of a weapon in a shooting that wounded a 15-year-old girl outside a Michigan school. Police say the girl was in a SUV with her parents and Kahlil Jamal Withers-Fleming about 4:30 p.m. Friday when a shot was fired inside the vehicle, which was parked in a lot at Pattengill Academy in Lansing.
