Michigan Democrats draft 'Health Care Bill of Rights' to oppose GOP bill

Michigan State House Minority Leader Sam Singh along with a number of other Democrats held press conferences across Michigan this week to introduce a “Health Care Bill of Rights” to resist Congressional Republican health care cuts that have already passed in the U.S. House.

“Hundreds of thousands of Michigan’s families and seniors are concerned about the chaos in health care and these devastating cuts," Singh said in Grand Rapids. "And that is why today, Democrats are introducing a Michigan health care Bill of Rights which would block some of the more toxic parts of the National Health Care plan.”

Among other declarations, the Health Care Bill of rights would block the age tax, and protect health benefits for people with pre-existing conditions.

Diagnosed with Grade 2 Oligodendroglioma, an inoperable and at often times terminal brain tumor, Dave Wenzel said  losing his health insurance would have devastating consequences.

“Because for a cancer survivor like me having affordable health insurance is a matter of life and death," Wenzel said. "And when I heard that Republicans in Washington were trying to take away coverage for my pre-existing condition, I became deeply concerned.”

Representing Grand Rapids’ 76th District, House Rep. Winnie Brinks says a number of people in Kent County would lose their health coverage if the Republican Health Care Bill passes.

“I think it’s really important for them to get a clear message from us that we as Democrats find this really important and we will be standing up for their access to health care that they have gained in the last couple of years,” Brinks said.

Democrats said in a statement they will be introducing a joint resolution this week.
