Statewide poll surveys gubernatorial candidates appeal

A statewide poll asks Michigan voters which of the gubernatorial candidates are recognizable and appealing leading up to the November elections. 

Lansing-based EPIC-MRA recently surveyed 600 registered Michigan voters likely to vote in the upcoming November midterm election.

Survey respondents were asked if they have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of gubernatorial candidates. The pollster selected Republicans Brian Calley,

Bill Schuette and Dr. Jim Hines. Schuette received a 25-percent favorable opinion and 25-percent unfavorable. Calley collected 21-percent total favorable to 16-percent unfavorable and Dr. Jim Hines gathered 5-percent of the favorable opinion vote to 3-percent unfavorable.

Of the Democrats running for Governor Shri Thanadar leads the pack earning a 23-percent favorable opinion rating to 20-percent unfavorable. Gretchen Whitmer received 16-percent favorable to 9-percent unfavorable and Abdul El-Sayed tallied more unfavorable opinions with 12-percent of those polled having a positive view to 15-percent unfavorable.

If the election were held today, in a pair of hypothetical matchups featuring Republican Bill Schuette, he comes up short.

Respondents favored Democrat Shri Thanedar 44-percent to Schuette’s 38-percent.

The results were similar when facing Gretchen Whitmer, She received 43-percent of vote to Schuette’s 38-percent.

The poll reveals 45% percent of respondents were Democrats, 39% Republican, 13% Independent and 3% characterize themselves as undecided or other.

The Epic-MRA poll has a 4% +/- margin for error.
