The Johnson Center for Philanthropy joins us for our regular Nonprofit Navigation discussion. Today, special guests Dr. Salvatore Alaimo, Brittany Gray and Shatha Abu Srour discuss SPNHA Research.

Grants totaling $872,000 are being awarded to 20 employer groups, labor organizations and other nonprofits in Michigan to support worker safety and health. The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration says the grants will fund projects that include crane rigging and signaling, ergonomics, tree trimming and chain saw safety, emergency actions plans, machine emergencies and workplace violence prevention.

Over a thousand local volunteers came out Friday to take part in Heart of West Michigan United Way’s annual Day of Caring. With the goal of assisting local non-profits, the Day of Caring is the largest corporate volunteer event in West Michigan. 

“It never gets old to see people who are willing to give back,” Michelle Van Dyke, the president and CEO of Heart of West Michigan United Way said. “It’s just palpable. So it’s fun to see, but it’s not surprising, because this is West Michigan.” '

The Nonprofit organization Fleece and Thank You presents a Make a Blanket Day in early August, with the goal of 5000 blanket to be made and delivered to those in need. Spencer Rohatynski  joins us to share the details.

Electrical contracting firm Feyen Zylstra unveiled a new program on Wednesday that will pay employees of the Grand Rapids based company to volunteer at area non-profits. And they don't care where. 

The locally owned firm unveiled FZimpact at their Grand Rapids headquarters as ten non-profits joined them in the hopes of recruiting volunteers of their own. Feyen Zylstra CEO Nate Keotje said the program represents that there is more to business than the bottom line. 

Local non-profits unite for Giving Tuesday

People all over Grand Rapids reached into their pocketbooks yesterday for Giving Tuesday as local non-profits partnered together in a joint fundraiser. More than 200 West Michigan nonprofits joined forces Tuesday for #GRgives, a city-wide campaign to raise funds for local non-profits on the unofficial holiday. 

Stephanie Adams, the marketing and communications director at the Dorothy A. Jonson Center for Philanthropy says the fundraising effort began five years ago in an effort to make Giving Tuesday in Grand Rapids more collaborative.
